New Eve 2014 - Earring Hope Vexilloids

These ear rings also wave like vexilloid.

A lost gem for the ages.

Vexillolid Like item in Scandal's Goodbye to You - 1982

The earring is similar to a vexilloid, such that it flaps and shakes in the wind.  Earrings are usually considered a fashion accessory.  Earrings convey messages and express personal taste and certain life styles.

Until recently men having pierced ears usually meant one was of certain lifestyle, depending on which ear was pierced.  Nowadays such meaning has been lost.

In the video Goodbye to You by Scandal 1982 Patty Smyth wears earrings of intense size that reflect her intense feeling towards a person in her past.

As 2014 winds down, it is nice to take stock on several of the hard people who taught you well but, luckily you never have to see again, or they are no longer above you to demand anything and have lost their abusive power to influence your life.  Such as crappy landlords, mean neighbors, nutty co-workers, psychotic teachers and bosses.  And of course abusive lovers.

Also a good song for getting motivated to quit smoking, drinking alcohol, eating fast food, or any number of chronic deleterious habits.  When you get the urge to do it just listen to this song.

Livery and Flags from Disney's Frozen 2013

Hans and Disney hit it again.

Here banner lamp post flags line the streets showing the silhouette of one of the princesses. City bunting pennant flags with livery of green, gold, and purple.

The themes of hiding ones secret powers that go against the grain of what expected are a theme to this story.  Sometimes gifts given to young people are seen as weird or taboo.  But in Disney's Frozen, an Ice Queen is liberated to be herself.

Certainly everyone has personal liberation days,
when you leave a horrible job, move to a new town, or when certain negative people who hold you back are taken away.  In the wake of this change you are able to be free and follow your destiny.

Personal liberation years for me include: 2013, 1994, and 1990.   New happy bosses with good workers, good bye to mean judgmental jerks etc...

Christmas Fraternal Holiday Flag Partners of Kansas and Montana

For 2014 the Fraternal Flag Pairs of Kansas and Montana were decked out in the Christmas Holiday Spirit.  In particular Kansas was North Polarized.  Instead of a sunflower we now have a poinseita, likewise the heraldic torse/head band has been coloured red and green.  Night has fallen and 34 stars are gleaming in the distance.  The state motto now says "Merry Christmas."  The five buffalo have become sheep while the two Native Americans on horseback have become shepherds with crooks.  Santa's eight reindeer have replaced the eight cattle, likewise the two wagons have been replaced with Santa on a practice run, before take off.  The house by the river has a wreath on its door and red and green Christmas lights glowing on the roof.  Obviously a warm fire in the fireplace that has produced three puffs of smoke.  Instead of the sun peeking over the horizon we see a crescent moon with an Earth glow.  Finally the man plowing in the foreground has been replaced with an elf pushing a wheel barrel full of presents.  Hard to see on the elf is a candy cane badge.

Montana's holiday spirit is more subdued.  But it also displays a cold winter night with snow covering the ground.  The Spanish words for "Oro Y Plata" have been replaced with "Hope & Peace."  Also missing are the miner's tools and plow.  Instead we have three musical instruments: a drum, harp, and trumpet.  The trees have grown super tall and have what looks like white lights.  Although the scene indicates a Christmas theme, it is not explicit.  Perhaps it could be just a cold night with snow on the ends of the branches?  Like in the North Polarized Kansas flag the moon is present but it is full and high in the sky.  Only a few stars are out.

US Flag in Forrest Gump

On this Thanksgiving Day there are so many things to be thankful for.  In the movie Forrest Gump 1994, the story of one man, Forrest Gump, reflects back the story of America in tale is one to consider.

Several flags appear in dramatic fashion.  Forrest Gump's best friend Bubba looses his life in Vietnam, but Forrest decides to live out Bubba's dream fishing for shrimp.
Here the US flag is on the flying on the shrimp fishing boat Jenny.  Note that Forrest Gump was filmed at the apex of natural colour filming.  Currently as of 2014 movie directors, since the Matrix in 1999, opt to film in a genre of limited colours. Maybe soon they will go back to black and white since natural color movies are out of fashion
During the anti-war rally in DC, a man with an American Flag shirt stands in awe as Forrest gives a speech about Vietnam.
Here the US flag is in the background next to several other flags, including the US Army flag.

Other Flags in Forrest Gump

The state flag of Alabama appears in Forrest Gump 1994 during his graduation ceremony.
A unique banner is created just for Forrest Gump when he attends Alabama.  It is a message vexilloid that tells him to stop running.

A banner of DC War protesters appears on the back of a 'Hippie Bus'.
The flag of China appears in Forrest Gump 1994 during his international Ping Pong match.

Confederate Flags In Forrest Gump

The Confederate flag appears in the movie Forrest Gump several times.  As the hero of the film is from Greebow, Alabama, it is inevitable that the flag should appear in the film.

In the introductory scene we learn of Forrest Gump's origin of his name which has its ties to a 'bed sheet' rally community.
During Forrest Gump's service in the US Army in Vietnam it appears during the opening scene.
Here Forrest is running away from of his classmate bullies, who chose to put a Confederate Battle flag on the front of the pick up truck.
Hardest to see is the Old Georgia state flag that used the Confederate Battle flag in its design.  It can be seen in the background hanging off of the building.

Vietnam Forrest Gump Flags

In 1994 the Viet Cong flag was waved in the faces of Americans for one last time, in the movie Forrest Gump. It apparently appears as a captured flag, that is used to decorate the toilet stalls.

Forrest Gump Flag

In Forrest Gump's bedroom, Forrest drew an American flag.  Although it does not accurately portray the flag, it accurately captures a child's perception of the US flag.  It has the key elements of stars, and red and white stripes.

Blue Jeans Awareness Ribbon

The blue jeans awareness ribbon is dedicated to helping find a cure for all sorts of genetic diseases.  Nearly 1 in 10 people are affected by rare and genetic orders.  Approximately 30% of children with these nearly invisible to the media and public syndromes will not see their first day in kindergarten.  Over 7,000 distinct rare and genetically related diseases are represented by this symbol.

The jeans ribbons is a poetic reference to malfunctioning genes associated with these disorders. The golden rivet in the center refers to the origin of jeans when Jacob Davis first used reinforced metal rivets to make hardy denim work pants - also known as jeans, first created sometime in the 1870s.

The golden rivet also symbolizes the proverbial golden genetic thread that connects all of our lives.  It is reminder that we are all related to each other and share the same basic genetic blueprint.  And that strangers, friends and others are actually members of our family.  Furthermore the golden rivet distinguishes this blue ribbon symbol from the multitudes of other important causes that also utilize a blue ribbon.

Batten's Syndrome - Falling under the Jean's Awareness Ribbon

Awareness ribbons are popular vexilloids that carry a message by a colourful and simple means.

Like flags, depending on the colours used - these ribbons communicate a message.  Perhaps the most successful and renowned ribbon is the pink breast cancer ribbon.  But since there are a limited number of colours, some awareness groups use designs to convey their message.  One particular unique design is the jigsaw autism awareness ribbon that a pieces of the puzzle in red, yellow, and blue.

The purpose of these ribbons is to promote public awareness, inspire hope, muster moral support, and aim for healing.  One particular unique ribbon is the blue jeans ribbon that refers to rare types of genetic syndromes that often cut life short or add a heavy burden to those persons born with rare genetic complications.  The jeans ribbon, is play on the word for genes.  It is a unique ribbon that represents all types of genetic complications united under one ribbon - the jeans ribbon.

Rare Genes Ribbon with a Golden Rivet to
distinguish it from other blue ribbons
My attention to the genes related "Jean's Ribbon" was sparked by tragic condition of Batten's Disease that has affected one of my family members.  Batten's Syndrome causes persons to loose their eye sight at an early age, then effects the central nervous system.  Eventually their minds regress along with motor coordination leading to a shortened lifespan.

We are at primitive stage of genetic therapy, but with good science and caring hearts a cure is surely within our reach.

1950s Refeshments Vexilloid

A vexilloid appears in the most iconic theater refreshment ad during the 1950s.  The leading refreshment dressed in blue, which appears to be a chocolate bar is holding a drum majors mace with golden orb as the finial.  Behind the leader is a bucket of popcorn holding a refreshment standard.  The refreshment standard is a white broadside with a "Refreshments" written in all capital letters in the colour green.

Imagine going to the movies in a suit?  That's what some people did in the 1950s.  Here the four snacks are being consumed by the American nuclear family of the 1950s.

It has been said that Frylocks father is the bucket of popcorn and Master Shakes mom is the cup of soda.  Oddly Meatwad's father was a chocolate bar.

Flags from the Sixth Sense - 1999

In 1999 the best spooky thriller that was ever made came to be under the guidance of M. Knight Shyamalan: The Sixth Sense 1999.  Most horror movies end on a sad, funny, or on a note of horror, but Shyamalan created a paradoxical movie that was sad and uplifting.  It addresses bullying, parenting, love, death, the sprit realm, and justice.  It was worthy of attention back then, and even more so today.

Playing with the viewer's one dimensional perception of a movie, the twist at the end reveals the biased eye of the beholder phenomena, that many souls fall into with a tunneled perception of their surroundings.   The great thing about this movie is a second viewing is completely different from the first.

Of vexillological consequence are a few flags that appear during a local Philadelphia elementary school's production of Camelot.  Flags pennants can be seen on the tops of the castles, which are so common in fairytale settings. The most unique flag is the frozen blowing in the wind felt red lance pennon.

The Vexillological Trainline

The Vexillological Trainline is a flag arrangement from national to the ultra-micro political level.  Officially speaking the township/city/borough flag is the lowest political level of the US.  But below the township are several more personal levels: the Quadrant, Blockship, Hutship and Partship.

Here we have a map of the world with two Vexillological Trainlines showing two "Engine to Caboose" flags from the personal ultra-micro political level up unto the national level.  On the West Coast by Los Angeles is the Vexillological Trainline of a fictional character from the Big Bang Theory Show.  On the East Coast is the Vexillological Trainline of a friendly neighborhood blogger.

As Pasadena is a part of Los Angeles Metropolitan Area so too is Lansdale a part of the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area.  Likewise the Rose Bowl is renowned in Pasadena, just as the Army vs. Navy Game is best known for being played in Philadelphia; as this was the city where the official US Army and US Navy were created during the 1776 Revolution.  Likewise a good match for Caltech is the University of Pennsylvania.

To quote Joseph Ridgeway Grundy, "If a man does not have pride in his own hometown, he isn't likely to give a rap* about his own country."

*sometimes a letter 'C' can be placed in front of the 'R' when appropriate

Montgomery County Flag of Pennsylvania

The flag for Montgomery County, Pennsylvania consists of a horizontal tri-bar with the county seal in the center stripe, centrally placed.  It is your standard American Heraldic style.  The shield features a train passing a city and an arm holding several bolts of lightning.  On the hoist is a female supporter, while on the fly is a male supporter.  In the crest position is a heraldic headband with a balance held up by a human arm.

Quadrant Flags of Pasadena, California

Nations are ranked as a level 10 geographic division, then states are level 9, then counties are level 8, then townships and incorporated cities and boroughs are a level 8.  So what is below?  A level 7 division parcels the basic unit of a community into quadrants, as is done with galaxies.

An example city, Pasadena, CA, has been here factored into separate quadrants.  Each quadrant gets its own flag based upon the level 8 flag or emblem.  Typically alpha quadrant flags use a red colour, beta quadrant flags use a yellowish colour, gamma quadrant flags use a green colour, while the delta quadrant is typically blue.

The Pasadena Alpha Quadrant flag has a red field and white rose in the badge area.
The Pasadena Beta Quadrant has a yellow field with a red rose.  It was here that a matching filed of quantum probabilities showed us the apparent roof of The Big Bang Theory Show.
The Delta Quadrant Flag of Pasadena has long out stretched arm that reaches towards the mountains.  The filed is indigo and it has a pink rose as its badge.

The Gamma Quadrant flag has a field of green with a yellow rose with a black stem.  It is the smallest quadrant of Pasadena, but it is where the Rose Bowl takes place.
